What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Removable dentures, both complete and partial, use messy adhesives to remain in place, but implant-supported dentures are connected to titanium posts in your jaw so they are secure and stable. This means that the dentures won't slip, even when eating or speaking. With more support and security, patients with implant dentures can feel confident that their dentures will stay in their mouths. Implanted dentures look attractive and natural and can be used just like your natural teeth. At Sexton Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Germantown, Arlington, and Memphis, TN patients can get implanted dentures that feel comfortable and look natural. What Is the Treatment Process for Getting Implant-Supported Dentures?
Prior to any treatment, one of our doctors will complete a thorough exam, including digital imaging, to assess the strength of your gums and jawbone. If the gums or jawbone are too weak to securely hold the dental implants, then a gum and/or bone graft surgery can be needed. Once the grafted area is strengthened, you can have implant surgery.
You will be given a local anesthetic to numb your mouth before the procedure. Other sedation options may be considered if the procedure will be lengthy or if it helps you feel more comfortable. An incision will be made in your gums, and posts will be inserted into the jawbone. For dentures, four or more implants are usually used per arch. The incisions in the gums will be closed, with the upper portion of the implant visible above the gums. The posts will be covered with a temporary denture as they heal in the next 4 – 6 months. The implants will integrate with your jawbone and gums. As soon as the dental implants are healed, your custom-made dentures can be attached to the posts and adjusted for a secure fit.
